The show is based on Fire & Blood, a fictional history book by George R.R. Martin that is not written or structured like a typical novel. The conflict of Alicent and Aegon going against Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne will continue to be central to House of the Dragon in Season 2 as the Dance of the Dragon and a civil war gets underway. The couple had three children, Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena, but none were named heir to the Iron Throne, with Rhaenyra holding that honor.

The Russian-born actress has appeared in Banshees, Krypton, and played Xela in Game of Thrones season 5 episode 5, The Bells. The Swedish actress has appeared in the series Partisan and the film Black Widow and has starred in many Swedish television shows including Irene Huss and Hassel. The Australian actor is best known for his roles in the Aussie series Packed to the Rafters and Love Child, along with roles in the films The Wolf Creek, The Water Diviner and Holding the Man. Spokes has appeared in numerous television series, including ITV drama The Ipcress File, Hitmen, Casualty, and Holby City.
