A Brief History Of The Iconic Bungalows Of L A.

bungalow house

The interior of a bungalow home often features built-in cabinetry — to make maximum use of the compact living space — and is typically flanked by two or three bedrooms. California bungalows are easily recognized by their siding which, like Craftsman houses, uses natural materials like stucco, wood, and shingles. In America, the style became popularized in the early 20th century by a magazine called The Craftsman, which sold residential blueprints by famed Arts and Crafts furniture designer Gustav Stickley.

Bringing the ‘80s Back to the Future: 11 Modern ‘80s Design Tips from the Pros

You’ll often find different materials such as glass or concrete and light-colored exteriors mixed with clean lines while maintaining a low-pitched roof. California bungalow homes are very similar to the Craftsman style, but their differences come down to the materials used to construct the exterior. The California bungalow typically uses shingle or horizontal siding out of woods such as Redwood or stucco, maintaining that natural feel. Bungalow houses vary depending on the region you’re buying a home in – think a California bungalow in Sacramento, CA, or a Craftsman bungalow in Milwaukee, WI.

The property price, number of days on the market, square footage, year built, lot size, and other important listing details like assigned schools and construction type are listed on each Los Angeles Bungalow MLS listing by the listing agent. As Berman says, Craftsman bungalows are the product of the American Arts and Crafts movement, which focused on quality craftsmanship and natural materials. This type of bungalow was built all over the West Coast and Midwest in the early 1900s thanks to furniture maker Gustav Stickley’s magazine called The Craftsman, which supplied residential blueprints.

A big advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement, with its simple, artisanal aesthetics, Stickley also dubbed his homes “bungalows,” proposing them as regular, full-time residences. Alison is part of the content marketing team and enjoys writing about housing affordability and home interior design ideas. Her dream home is a cottage-style house with a chef’s kitchen and a cozy room to store and play vinyl records. Bungalow homes grew as an offshoot of the “Craftsman” home, popularized at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Some of these homes are "Hot Homes," meaning they're likely to sell quickly. Most homes for sale in Los Angeles stay on the market for 48 days and receive 3 offers. Popular neighborhoods include Pacific Palisades, Encino, Porter Ranch, Sylmar, Studio City, Granada Hills, Sherman Oaks, Chatsworth, Northridge, and Woodland Hills. California bungalow is an alternative name for the American Craftsman style of residential architecture, when it was applied to small-to-medium-sized homes rather than the large "ultimate bungalow" houses of designers like Greene and Greene.

The bungalow was a popular home choice due to its relative affordability and smaller size. They may also feature an attic space, but this depends on the steepness of the classic pitched, gabled roof. Typically a bungalow will have a raised foundation, with steps leading up to the house and covered porch space. In the real estate biz, the definition of a “bungalow” has been stretched quite a bit, often used to describe small, single-story houses built in the early-20th century, no matter their design. True bungalows, however, have a very specific design that was spun off from Craftsman-style homes. Many bungalows are single story, although some may have an unfinished basement or an additional half-story that includes an attic space.

Filled with classic characteristics like shingled and gabled roofs and overhanging eaves, you’ll find these homes have earth-tone exteriors like browns and greens. There are currently 12 homes for sale matching bungalow style in Los Angeles at a median listing price of $1.2M. This map is refreshed with the newest listings matching bungalow style in Los Angeles every 15 minutes.

Neighborhoods like Belmont Heights in Long Beach, Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena, Highland Park in Los Angeles, and North Park in San Diego are known for their high concentrations of California bungalows. At between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet, bungalows are a great option for young families looking for a starter home, empty nesters hoping to downsize in a home without stairs, or single homeowners who want a detached house and home lifestyle without managing a huge property. In fact, people today often use the terms “Craftsman home” and “bungalow” interchangeably.

A "California" bungalow (except in Australia, see below) is not made of brick, but in other bungalows, most notably in the Chicago area, this is commonplace due in large part to the weather. ‘Some time ago, there was a gorgeous Melbourne house featured in Home Beautiful magazine. It was a renovated California bungalow, and had the perfect classic contemporary style. Gorgeous windows, great layout, rambling garden and beautiful classic features,’ according to Driftwood Interiors.

These homes usually have their entrance positioned towards the side of the house and were built with an unfinished basement. While not the same as Chicago bungalows, the Prairie bungalow has its origins in Chicago. The Prairie School, a group of Chicago architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, was at the forefront of this bungalow style. Prairie bungalow homes have strong and low horizontal lines, with a hipped or sloping roof and narrow windows.

The magazine published an article called "Possibilities of the Bungalow as a Permanent Dwelling, " suggesting the style for permanent residences and begin adding bungalow floorplans to its catalog. The style gained national popularity as more bungalow blueprints began making their way into magazines like House Beautiful and Ladie’s Home Journal, as well as through home kits sold by nationwide mailorder retailers like Montgomery Warn and Sears. All Bungalow style homes within the city name or zip code you entered will populate the page, and you’ll be able to begin your search. American Bungalows are modest stick-built homes that came on the scene in the late 1800s and flourished through the early 1900s across the Los Angeles area. Bungalows are typically small, usually only one story, and almost always have a porch.

The classic bungalow attributes of style, simplicity, sound construction, and living close to nature maintain these homes as a popular symbol of California living. Mission-style bungalows are known for broad, overhanging eaves with exposed wooden rafters. Their exteriors have a pronounced Spanish influence, with smooth stucco siding and terracotta-tiled roofs. Chicago bungalows are built from brick and sometimes have an additional half-story stacked on the traditional one-story frame design.

Los Angeles Bungalow Style Homes For Sale

But the bungalow is actually an extremely common American style of residence. Dating from the turn of the 20th century, these small and relatively inexpensive residences offered working class people their first shot at property ownership — and they remain ideal for first-time homebuyers today, as well as those looking to downsize to a more modest dwelling. Because bungalow homes have large windows and are built close to the ground, privacy can be a concern. Some homeowners address this issue by planting tall hedges, shrubs, or trees around the house’s perimeter to obstruct the windows. A bungalow’s first floor will be raised above the foundation, and with a short flight of steps from the sidewalk to a covered front porch.

Pros of a bungalow house

Over the past few years, housing-policy experts, including Vallianatos, have argued that bungalow courts should be built again—an affordable, quality solution for L.A’.s chronic housing shortage. “It’s a good win-win in terms of addressing the housing crisis,” he says. According to historian and urban designer Todd Gish, in 1908, the city unveiled a new government-funded court on Navarro Street in the East L.A. Neighborhood of El Sereno—one of the first model courts that was not considered “slum” housing. Featuring 18 two-room lodgings, shared latrines, and a common public space, each tiny home was rented to families, predominantly people of color, at $5 a month. Similar courts, both privately and publicly funded, soon sprang up in working- and middle-class neighborhoods across Los Angeles, and a few from the 1920s still survive on 81st and 82nd Streets in South Los Angeles.

Prairie bungalows are known for their strong, long, and low horizontal lines. They have hipped roofs with overhanging eaves, flat chimneys, contrasting exterior materials, narrow windows, and decorative doorways. Craftsman bungalows are recognizable for their low-pitched gabled or hipped roofs; overhanging eaves; exposed brackets and beams; thick, tapered columns; abundance of windows; and front porches or verandas. All of the bungalows that exist in America can be traced back to the single-story huts that were found throughout 19th-century India.

During the British colonial occupation, travelers often stayed in these style homes when visiting the country. As a result, bungalow homes became popular in England, eventually gaining traction in the US during the early 20th century. When available, information about the Bungalow home’s surrounding neighborhood will be included along with local schools and similar real estate listings. Each property listing includes general information like the price, year built, size of the home (square feet), size of the lot, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and other important details. You’ll also be able to check the number of days on market (DOM), the MLS number, and the status (active or pending). “Small can be cozy, but it can also feel a bit tight, especially if you’ve got a big family,” Rohani admits.

In addition to serving as primary residences, bungalows also became vacation getaways. By the 1950s, it was common practice for Jewish families from New York City to spend their summers in bungalow colonies in the Catskill Mountains. These resorts offered all-inclusive amenities and camp-like activities along with the bungalow lodgings. Before showing people the housewarming video, the grateful son congratulated his parents on TikTok when he revealed he would give them the house. That year, Los Angeles made one parking spot per unit a requirement in all new residential buildings, according to Vallianatos. The city also passed an ordinance requiring a front, side, and back yard for every new residence.

Craftsman is an architectural style that can apply to any home interior or exterior, while a bungalow is a specific type of home construction. That means you can have a Craftsman-style bungalow, but you can also have a Craftsman-style house that isn’t a bungalow. And a bungalow, a somewhat more generic term, doesn’t have to be in the understated Craftsman style (in fact, some of the Greenes’ efforts were quite large and lavish). They were met halfway by houses whose blueprints and floor plans were published by New York-based interior designer Gustav Stickley in his magazine The Craftsman.

Most commonly, the structure is made from brick, weatherboard and timber, has timber flooring and balustrades made from wood or brick. Stained glass windows, stylish front door and verandah pylons are sometimes an added characteristic. The gabled roofs also tend to have overlapped layers of wood, slate or tiling. The colour schemes are usually red, or livened brick-colours are common, but can also feature, greys, rendered, roughcast and weatherboard finishes.

The ocean is a vast, uncharted territory, much like the business world. Incorporating nautical elements such as anchors, ships, or compasses with your octopus logo can symbolize exploration, adventure, and the courage to navigate unexplored territories. This symbolism is perfect for businesses that pride themselves on exploration, whether it's in the physical sense or through innovative ideas and solutions. Tribal octopus tattoos are very common and have a deep association with the Polynesian tribe. If you feel connected to this tribe and want to show off your tribal roots or admiration, you must try out this tribal octopus tattoo.

The image has minimal outlining, and its lightness against the bright orange background helps this tattoo be both a statement and minimalist piece. This tattoo features watercolor shading in a more abstract design. It’s a larger piece, taking up the better portion of the canvas’s upper arm and shoulder. However, the sketching of the linework and blending of the watercolors makes this tattoo feel light and delicate. Polynesian tattoos are exquisite and have great symbolic meaning. There’s no disputing that a Polynesian octopus tattoo produces a striking design.

How to create your design

Any octopus tattoo design you get will carry some strong meanings; hence, you can never run away from the meaning and significance of an octopus tattoo. Ah, the red octopus, a captivating creature that holds a special allure for those seeking deeper symbolism in their tattoos. My friend, the choice of a red octopus holds great significance, and it’s not just about its striking coloration. When done on the leg, the black and white palette provides a stunning visual contrast that adds gravitas to the intricate design of an octopus.

Eventually I could see the black eyes peering from the translucent eggs—it was a sign that the hatch date was near. When it comes to octopus tattoos, the options are as vast as the ocean itself. Each design holds its own unique charm, and there’s something for every tattoo enthusiast to explore. Hand tattoos are already pretty bold, but making it an intimidating octopus design? With its tentacles sprawling across your fingers or palm, you’re guaranteed to catch eyes and start conversations. Adding color to your octopus tattoo can give it a vibrant, lively edge.

With this, the downward flow of the tentacles help to keep a focus on the intended theme, even with additional designs. This colored idea ties in a bit of everything from the previous photos. The inner arm piece combines warm and cool tones while including both watercolor and traditional shading styles.

The tentacles are one of the most important physical features of an octopus, which symbolizes its special abilities. This tattoo symbolizes regeneration, as the tentacle of an octopus tends to grow back when it disengages one of them to escape or survive. My secret to success was being able to supply the juveniles with live foods of the appropriate size. Although their favorite food is crabs, snails are a bigger part of their diet due to their relative abundance. I collected hundreds of 1- to 4-mm black turban snails from the higher intertidal zone by simply brushing them off the rocks into my collection bucket. I made certain that the captives had these varied foods available to them at all times.

This style is bold, innovative, and perfect for brands looking to project a cutting-edge, tech-savvy, or avant-garde image. It’s about pushing boundaries and embracing a more unconventional approach to design. For those who prefer a touch of realism, this style captures the intricate details of the octopus - from the texture of its skin to the suction cups on its tentacles.

Nothing is sadder than finding your beloved pet dried up and dead on the floor or behind a nearby piece of furniture. Fortunately for me, bimacs seem to have less inclination to leave their watery homes. They will, however, explore every nook and cranny in the aquarium and can squeeze thru the smallest openings—their beak is the only part of their body that is not compressible. I was at school in southern Oregon and needed a project to fulfill the new graduation requirements set forth by the state.

With the goal of maximizing my chance to achieve success in captive husbandry, I set up my temperate saltwater aquarium system. Although my parents live on the ocean, I used artificial salt for the water. I plumbed three large tanks together with a commercial chiller and oversized protein skimmer. I had a functioning biological filter consisting of live rock and live sand. Aware that water quality was crucial to success, I wanted pristine, highly oxygenated water.

An octopus tattoo here offers you the perfect canvas to showcase the creature’s flowing limbs and intricate details. Ideal for guys who want to flaunt their ink but also easily conceal it if needed. A chest-placed octopus tattoo is best suited for those who are already familiar with the process of getting inked. Due to its expansive size and the specific placement, it often requires several appointments before completion. The addition of elements like water or an anchor can enhance the symbolism, making the tattoo resonate with varied meanings. Cool pulp fiction novel style delivery of heavy black fuzz shading.

They can be akin to living in a fishbowl instead of an ocean, trading in the variety of a far larger world for simplicity. The biggest obstacle to leaving the fishbowl is the cost of trying something else. These switching costs give Apple market power to raise prices or degrade the quality of products without fear of consumers turning away. The other major tech lawsuits raise similar consumer welfare concerns. But this one uniquely takes on the market power wielded by a company as a technological ecosystem — a one-stop virtual shop where users can communicate, play, watch, listen and buy.

The House That Jack Built 2018 film Wikipedia

the house that jack built

In one of these atrocities, he has been out for an afternoon hunting with his “family” — a woman (Sofie Gråbøl) he’s seeing and her two young sons — and, in a shocking moment, he stands in a rifle tower and guns down both boys. The second murder is a shot to the head that, in its suck-in-your-breath way, evokes the JFK assassination. There have been a handful of films over the decades that have lured us inside the lives of serial killers.

The House That Jack Built review – Lars von Trier serves up a smirking ordeal of gruesomeness

Von Trier, to me, hasn’t made anything close to a masterpiece since “Breaking the Waves,” in 1996, and “The House That Jack Built” doesn’t spoil that record. It’s halfway between a subversive good movie and a stunt. But it would have gotten under your skin more if it offered a humane counterpart to Jack — if it didn’t remain so fixated on Matt Dillon’s disaffected zombie drone. Originally conceived as a television project by von Trier, The House That Jack Built began production in Sweden in 2016. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, marking von Trier's return to the festival after more than six years.

the house that jack built

Production

No, it is all leading up to the final Death Metal Gustave Doré sequence, which gives the whole movie the structure and rhythm of an outrageously ambitious shaggy-dog joke. The giganticism of its coda puts the long, slow, nasty drear of what has gone before into a sort of perspective, and it is ingenious in its way, but like so much of what Von Trier does, the bang is like bursting a paper bag. But afterwards it doesn’t stay in your mind, other than to make you shake your head at its distinctive humourless silliness. Some versions use "cheese" instead of "malt", "judge" instead of "priest", "rooster" instead of "cock", the archaic past tense form "crew" instead of "crowed", "shook" instead of "tossed", or "chased" in place of "killed". Also in some versions the horse, the hound, and the horn are left out and the rhyme ends with the farmer. In the third incident, Jack brings his girlfriend and her two sons, "Grumpy" and George, on a hunting trip.

And in 1986, Michael Mann’s “Manhunter,” the most accomplished thriller of the modern era, turned Tom Noonan into the greatest psycho since “Psycho” — and part of the horror was that we got to know him. But “The House That Jack Built” never gets us to fully identify with Dillon’s Jack. The movie is constructed from his point of view (there’s no one else’s), but he’s too much of a sicko not to draw back from. Jack’s crimes get more insanely violent and reprehensible, and nothing is off limits for von Trier. Jack murders a woman in her living room, guns down a family on a hunting trip, and in the film’s most misguided sequence, cuts off the breasts of a woman he has verbally berated and nicknamed “Simple” (Riley Keough).

Movie Info

Actually, he couldn’t be a killer, she reasons, because he’s a “wimp.” Lots of people die in this movie — and, metaphor alert, a breast even becomes a change purse — but Thurman’s delivery of that word might be the most murderous thing that happens. “The House That Jack Built,” however, only rarely achieves that level of disturbing poetic awe. The film lopes along in a way that’s grimly absorbing yet, at the same time, falls short of fully immersive. And that’s not just because a lot of it doesn’t track along the spectrum of reality-based storytelling. So, is “The House That Jack Built” hollow provocation or dense commentary?

And Jack is something of an obsessive-compulsive, another trait he likely shares with a man who made a movie like “The Five Obstructions” (in which a director had to follow specific rules like, well, a serial killer who needs his crimes to be executed to perfection). And von Trier has been accused of misogyny on-screen and off, so it shouldn’t be surprising that Jack’s victims are mostly naïve women, although it's sometimes hard to watch. There’s a transcendently creepy image in “The House That Jack Built,” Lars von Trier’s two-and-a-half-hour drama starring Matt Dillon as a serial killer in the late ’70s.

So it’s a sort of relief that, for as sick and violent and sadistic as Lars von Trier’s new film is, “The House That Jack Built” fails to conjure anything as diabolical and morally outrageous as nonconsensual head-to-heinie. His movie is missing the clarity of vision to whip psychopathology into something rousingly intellectual. It fails to make depravity an experience that either stimulates or appalls. If I wanted to leave von Trier’s movie, it wasn’t because I was nauseated.

He kills both sons with a rifle before forcing the woman to have a picnic with their corpses. He allows the mother to run, but she allows herself to be shot by Jack. Jack fashions Grumpy's corpse into a sculpture with a grisly smile.

Drama, television, and film

This is a film that stolidly withholds the horror-thrill that almost any other kind of serial killer film will give you – from The Silence of the Lambs, to Saw, or Seven, or Zodiac, or Kind Hearts and Coronets. And it doesn’t have the pure gonzo-grossout ecstasy of The Human Centipede, although I suspect that Von Trier may have had that in the back of his mind for its final victims. Von Trier, for a while now, has winked at the way that he himself projects the spirit of a killer. The characters in his films — Emily Watson in “Breaking the Waves,” Björk in “Dancer in the Dark,” just about everyone in “Dogville” — have often ended up dying in what feels like the director’s ritualized acts of execution.

That moment was the culmination of his transition from artist to punk provocateur who wore the snarky perversity of his aggression like an armband. In the first incident, Jack encounters an abrasive woman on a rural road who needs to fix her broken jack to repair a flat tire. She irritates Jack, saying he looks like a serial killer, insulting him, and then stating he is too much of a wimp to kill anyone.

Cinema’s enfant terrible, Lars von Trier, is back with one of his most challenging and confrontational films in a career not exactly known for playing it safe. Notorious for a Cannes response that included both a standing ovation and hundreds of walk-outs, “The House That Jack Built” is finally available to American audiences, in limited release and on VOD in a slightly-edited R-rated cut. The “thrust” of von Trier’s vision remains to such a degree that it’s even hard to believe this version got an R (which raises the key question of “why bother cutting it at all?” but that’s for another piece). It’s one that compares artistry with murder as the director draws direct lines between creating art and taking lives.

About Us UX Design, Web Design, Branding

This continuous improvement ensures that journey mapping remains a productive and insightful tool for your organization. Everyone should understand journey mapping principles, existing research and input methods. Use engaging activities like trivia to refresh key concepts and energize the group. Focus on specific customer personas and how they interact with your service. If you cover multiple personas or scenarios, plan how to manage this complexity. For instance, with a music streaming app like Spotify, a customer journey map would show how a user finds, chooses and uses the app.

Current Lead Times:

This, built on an already strong base of tools, makes InDesign our top recommendation for page design software and a winner of our Editors' Choice award. Discriminating designers can expect to make a few trials and perform tweaks, but the Adjust Layout feature can save you time and agita the next time you need to change the page or spread layout of an entire document. As a control freak (there, I’ve said it), I don’t have a great relationship with InDesign’s Auto Style feature, even if it does save time. I feel that design created with intention and purpose simply requires time for meaningful conception, iteration, and subsequent delivery of an effective and beautiful product. That said, if you are a normal person with an I-need-it-yesterday boss or client who is demanding more, faster, you might adore this feature.

When Glenn and Ryan reconnected in 2001 Glenn had a big vision for Creative Commons and an amazing design problem to solve. Herein, a multifunctional COF lubricating system that possesses long-time dispersing stability without any surface modification and achieves NIR responsiveness and effective lubrication, is unprecedentedly developed. To build the system, special donor and acceptor (D-A) structured monomers are employed to enhance NIR absorption, conversion and facilitate charge movement and transport. The porous structure and enriched alkyl chain guarantees robust dispersing stability of COF in various oils, and high specific surface area stores and releases oils during friction process. The ball-like structure, high mechanical strength and formation of solid-liquid complex lubrication state make COF applicable to various working conditions for more than cycles. 0.36 wt% addition of COF reduces friction coefficient and wear rate by 11% and 79.8%, and polishing/repair effect as well as formation of protective lubrication film contribute to the long-time lubrication performance.

'The House That Jack Built' Review: Von Trier's Serial-Killer Drama

the house that jack built

It’s also the first sign that we’re dealing with a bore — in both Jack, the serial killer Dillon’s playing, and von Trier. The rampant grisliness reportedly sent people at the Cannes Film Festival storming out the theater. But, at Cannes, that can be a badge of honor and also just Day 6. The version we’re seeing is merely R-rated now, and is said to run shorter and therefore luxuriate less in the nastiness. Instead, we’re meant to stare right through him and lock into a cathartic kinship with von Trier, whose impulse toward subversion is working through Jack.

Filming

Jack kills the responding officer and returns to his freezer. He unseals a second chamber inside, where he meets Verge, who has been observing Jack throughout his life. Verge reminds Jack that he never built the home he intended to, as he had made several attempts to build his perfect house between his murders. In the freezer, he arranges the frozen corpses he has collected over the years into the shape of a house. As police break in, he enters his "house" and follows Verge into a hole in the floor, entering Hell.

In the fourth incident, Jack is in a dysfunctional relationship with a woman, Jacqueline, whom he psychologically and verbally abuses and derisively nicknames "Simple." When he drunkenly confesses to her at her apartment that he has killed 60 people, she does not believe him. After he marks red circles around her breasts with a marker, she becomes frightened and approaches a policeman, but he dismisses her and Jack as drunk. Jack later binds her before cutting off her breasts with a knife. He pins one of the breasts to the policeman's car and fashions the other into a wallet. Jack, a failed architect from Washington State, recounts how he became a serial killer to Virgil—whom he refers to as Verge—as Verge leads Jack through the nine circles of Hell. Each of Jack's crimes, depicted through flashback, feature social commentary from Jack and Verge.

Production

Offended, Jack bludgeons her with the tire jack and stores her body in an industrial freezer inside a factory building he purchased from a pizzeria. In the fifth incident, Jack has detained six men in his freezer, intending to kill all of them with a single bullet. One of the men, an army veteran, informs Jack that he has the wrong ammunition. He goes to get the right ammunition from a friend, SP. SP phones the police, since they're looking for Jack, who then stabs SP through the throat.

Scalding Hot Takes: The House That Jack Built — It Turns Out the Naming Rights! Membership Option Was For Real ....

But what we’re really listening to is von Trier have a debate with himself. Does that make for entertaining or even thematically engaging cinema? Not always, and if anything frustrates me about “The House That Jack Built” it's that it feels less focused than his best recent work (“Melancholia,” “Nymphomaniac”). Some of the long conversations about art are naval-gazing garbage that would get someone kicked out of a college class. Ultimately, it’s more of an inconsistent cry into the void than the conversation starter it could have been. Most of all, like the serial killer who literally tells a cop about his crimes, von Trier just wants you to pay attention to him.

The film finds von Trier wrestling with the claims of misogyny and misanthropy that have followed him his entire career, but not in the way you’d expect. If anything, he leans into both, daring you to look into the abyss with him as he interrogates his own dark side and banishes himself to the underworld. In five episodes, failed architect and vicious sociopath Jack recounts his elaborately orchestrated murders -- each, as he views them, a towering work of art that defines his life's work as ... But, of course, despite pleas to see it as a Trumpian allegory, Jack is more of a stand-in for von Trier himself. He not only envisions his elaborate murders as works of art but arranges the bodies afterwards into an increasingly morbid tableau. He keeps the corpses in a giant walk-in freezer, and delights in moving them around like, well, a director moves actors on a screen.

The House That Jack Built received polarized reviews from critics, and criticism for its graphic violence. About 10 minutes before Matt Dillon whacks Uma Thurman across the face with a car jack in “The House That Jack Built,” I was thinking about the last time I really didn’t want to see a movie. And the winner was each of my afternoons spent with an installment of “The Human Centipede” torture trilogy. There’s something about knowing that you’re minutes away from watching a psycho surgically conjoin a stranger’s face to a different stranger’s rump that makes you want to be someplace else. Jack has killed women, mainly women, and in a gloatingly sadistic manner – he has dismembered them and kept their body parts as souvenirs. But the most purely evil thing he has ever done is shown in flashback when Jack, as a boy, amputates the foot of a sweet yellow duckling with a pair of pliers, and then places the poor animal back in the water to watch it wobble round and round.

Lars von Trier, the giggling charlatan-genius of world cinema, has returned in a kind of triumph to the Cannes playground of provocation from which he was temporarily exiled in 2011, having miscalculated a Nazi gag at a press conference, and proved unable or unwilling to walk it back. His latest tongue-in-cheek nightmare The House That Jack Built is two and a half hours long but seems much longer – longer than Bayreuth, more vainglorious than Bayreuth. It is an ordeal of gruesomeness and tiresomeness that was every bit as exasperating as I had feared. But it concludes with what I also have to concede is a spectacular horror finale that detonated an almighty épat here in Cannes. The film ends with a colossal but semi-serious bang, an extravagant visual flourish and a cheeky musical outro over the closing credits to leave you laughing in spite of yourself as the house lights come up. But there is silliness and smirkiness where Von Trier believes the delicious black comedy to be.

In fact, he’s constantly calling attention to his crimes, whether it’s the mechanic who saw him with his first victim or the guy he waves to on the porch of his second. Von Trier has claimed that there’s something of a Trump allegory at work in “Jack,” and it’s likely at least in part in how brazenly Jack commits his crimes. He’s almost begging to be caught, but no one seems to care enough to do so. The whack Dillon gives Thurman in the opening minutes is the first indication that we’re dealing with a loon.

the house that jack built

Repulsed or fascinated—he doesn’t really care as long as you see him. The movie loosely follows a five-act structure in which Jack takes us to his walk-in fridge (piled high with bodies and frozen pizzas) and talks us through some of his greatest kills. Thurman plays a ritzy dame whose car breaks down and asks Jack for help. Their drive to the mechanic occasions both a harangue and winking commentary. Does Jack know, she asks, that his vacant blood-red van makes him seem like a killer?

It’s undeniably too long (153 minutes), often meandering through the same points over and over again in a way that becomes numbing, but there’s something more complex here than I think its critics are willing to see. Don’t get me wrong, I understand not being willing to dig through the horrors of this movie, and/or presuming there’s nothing to unearth, especially given von Trier’s track record of playful misanthropy. But von Trier remains a fascinating conundrum to me—a director who sees violence and pain on the same artistic spectrum as love and joy. Some might look at “The House That Jack Built” and say it’s completely lacking in the empathy we so often want from our artists, but I think von Trier would disagree, arguing that empathy requires understanding the entire human condition and not just its good side. But there is an awful lot of boring talking, talking, talking, dialogue in American-English-Google-translated-from-Danish. Characterisation and narrative events that look improbable rather than mysterious or strange.

This moment really did look absolutely, horribly real. As ever, this is a pseudo-American Psycho, set in an America that looks heartsinkingly like the forests of Denmark or perhaps Germany, locations in which the appearance of American automobiles and American actors look almost surreally out of place. There is supposedly a place called “Carlson’s Supermarket” near one of these very remote chalets, and although we don’t see this store, we see its brown bag with its logo. I don’t think I have ever seen a more obviously faked artefact in a film in my life.
